DIY Side Table

Sunday, January 26th, 2014 // by alicia

A couple of years ago when Robert’s was closing, I snagged this side table. It had never been finished – just raw wood. All I had to do was sand the top really good – it had a bunch of sticky tape and goobers on it, then I did a quick sanding job on the sides and front with my orbital sander. The whole thing maybe took 10 minutes. Easy peasy.

Here is the before:

The paint I used is called Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. If you have never used this paint before, it is wonderful and I highly recommend it. First of all, the paint hardly smells making it bearable to paint inside. The wax does have a stronger scent to it, but still bearable. Second, you don’t need to use primer. Third, you don’t need to sand off glossy finishes because it will stick to basically anything! Hallelujah! Once it’s painted how you like it to be, you then rub wax all over and buff it off to get a satin sheen. The more you buff it, the glossier it will look.

I first painted the whole thing Barcelona Orange, mostly because I wanted to see if I liked it being orange… I didn’t. So, I put Antibes Green on top, but sort of dry brushed it on so it didn’t cover the whole thing so the orange could peak through. I got some new knobs from Hobby Lobby (they have some really cute ones) and some new hinges and wha la! I really like how it turned out. It currently sits next to my toilet in the master bathroom to hold toiletries, toilet paper, etc.

Here are some close ups so you can see some details:

Happy 5 Months, Emmett!

Sunday, January 5th, 2014 // by alicia

5 Months already?

This little boy is growing up so fast. He is smiling all the time and we can even get some giggles out of him. He is very ticklish on his back and sides. It’s so cute to hear him giggle. :)

He started eating rice cereal last week and he absolutely loves it. He can’t quite roll over yet but he arches his back to his right side while he sleeps, mostly to look at his video monitor (I think he knows we’re watching him – he always stares at it and puts his little fishy in front of it blocking our view. Little rascal!) He has started to rub his eyes with his fist when he’s tired. Sometimes he will fall asleep with his hands on his eyes – in mid rub. So cute. He is starting to get angry when we try and swaddle him when we put him in his crib, making it harder for him to go to sleep because he keeps grabbing at his binky and pulling it out! Sometimes he’ll be able to get it back in – he tries – but rarely succeeds. He is also starting to teeth. :( He will just wimper sometimes because they hurt. Poor guy!

We love little E so much. He has been such a joy to have in our home.

Jenkins Review – 2013

Sunday, January 5th, 2014 // by Joel

‘Twas the week before Christmas, and all over the floor, Lay boxes untouched from our move weeks before.

Some were half full, others entirely stuffed, “We’ll unpack soon!” We both heartily puffed.

But the truth of the matter lie in the mess in each room, Four moves in 2 years kinda filled us with gloom.

But this most recent house, in this quaint little city, Recharged our spirits and made me feel witty.

So without further ado, without causing a scene, Here is the Jenkins Family Review, Year Twenty Thirteen.

Joel turned 34, lost some hair (some was gray), He joined a new company, in the east far away.

Still dabbling on the web, making sites that go online, Taking photos when he can when he finds the time.

He loves to think, and he schemes quite a lot, Always thinking of Apps hoping one will be hot.

Alicia turned 30 just a few weeks ago, But she looks as young as ever if I do say so.

Her year was crazy! Filled with all kinds of drama, Cause on August the First Alicia became a mama!

But hold on, let’s go back just a short while before, When we were out camping by Strawberry Reservoir.

At 5 in the morning she went out to go pee, (Being pregnant makes you go an awful lot, you see).

On her walk back she had a terrible fall, Back to the camper she had to crawl.

In a frenzied rush to the hospital we went, Waiting for the diagnosis many hours were spent.

Finally the Dr came in, with a grave look on his face, She had broken both her ankles! And it sucked.

With crutches and boots she waddled here and there, Nine months pregnant with big boots caused many to stare.

Now, back to the baby, the one we both love, Who was given to us by Heavenly Father above.

He’s a cute little boy, we think he’s just swell, He goes by the name of Emmett Maxwell.

He talks up a storm, he poops like a man, He loves to sit up, does it as often as he can.

He’s growing so fast, like a weed some would say, He’s eager to smile, and he just loves to play.

So in Twenty Thirteen we increased by one, We had ups, we had downs, we always had fun.

We bought a few cars, we moved houses twice, We did what we could to always be nice.

This holiday season we happily say, MERRY CHRISTMAS to you, have a nice day.
